MOPACA INVITATIONAL
ALPACA SHOW

SEMINAR SCHEDULE AND BIOS

Jackie Wood Bio:
Tanimara Great Pyrenees
"Introduction to Guard Dog Training"
Featuring "Beren"

My name is Jackie Wood and I began breeding Pys in 1986 under the name of Tanimara Great Pyrenees. I just fell in love with the breed when I saw a groomed for show Pyr, walk by and my heart was captured at that very moment. Due to lack of internet in those years and my very rural location, I did not have the chance to research and study the breed before I found one (big mistake!). But as I observed the behavior of my new Pyr pup, I realized I needed more info. So the search was on. I soon learned that this breed needed something to guard so I bought them some sheep to keep them contented. Watching my Pyrs from the deck each day I was able to observe their behavior with the livestock very closely. They filled my heart with pride when they took on a cougar and ran him off. Their interaction as guardians never ceases to amaze me. Their very big hearts and strong guardian instincts give us a dog that is very intelligent and each dog has its own pyrsonality. I can never say strongly enough how amazing they are.

I knew that there was a shortage of info out there for the use of this very ancient breed in their original use as a livestock guardian, so I was determined to provide that info, and to provide the farming community with good guardians. My breeding program began then and as I gained first hand knowledge of how these dogs worked, I learned more about them daily and then set up an online educational site called Pyr Talk in 2000. From there my services expanded to doing seminars where needed.

My outlook on this breed is that you can not find a more perfect solution to predator control. My goal has been to produce dogs of quality with strong guardian instincts. A good guardian must have good conformation to do the job it was bred to do. Due to that and some conformation problems in my blood lines of 21 years I have recently changed my bloodlines and my new, 16 mo old Pyr pup just took his championship in 3 shows! He is CH Beren's Hope of Thorn Hill "Beren". He is out of, not only champion show lines, but lines that have been active as guardians, and even now he is in with goats when he is not at the show ring. Working together we can find what you need to protect your livestock and how to interact with your Pyrs to have the best guardian possible.

Marty McGee Bennett Bio
"Basic Training/Contact"
Mini Clinic (Showing Off)

Marty McGee Bennett's first llama jumped off the back of a pickup truck and into her heart in 1981. Since then Marty has devoted her professional life to the well being of llamas and alpacas and the education of camelid enthusiasts. Over the years Marty has been a llama breeder, conference organizer, board member, fiber artist, and most importantly trainer and teacher. Marty brings a variety of experience and qualifications to her work with camelids, including a B.S. degree in Animal Behavior.

Marty's combination of TTEAM, with the principals of balance and leverage and a second sense with both camelids and people make "Camelidynamics" the world's most popular, and enduring training/handling system for camelids. Marty has taught the principles of animal handling to veterinarians and veterinary students at veterinary schools around the county and was the only non-DVM invited to contribute to the Veterinary Clinics of North America series on Camelids.

Her clinics, books and videos have helped thousands of llama and alpaca owners more fully understand, appreciate and enjoy this magical animal. Marty's most recent book "The Camelid Companion" published in 2001 has received rave reviews in publications worldwide. Conducting hundreds of clinics in North America and around the world including numerous trips to Australia, New Zealand and Europe have kept Marty on the road for much of the past 20 years. Marty her husband Brad and their family of four-leggeds recently settled down in Bend Oregon after spending a year touring the country in a motor home. For more information about Marty, clinics and equipment log on to www.camelidynamics.com.

Richard & Catherine Stickann Bio
"Alpaca Nature Day Camps:
Educating Children about Alpacas
and Getting the Grant to Make it All Happen"

FREE SEMINAR PRESENTATION

With the help of a SARE grant the Stickann's were able to set up their Alpaca and Nature Day Camps where they taught the campers to work with the alpacas, including barn work, halter training, heat management, alpaca body language, pasture basics, etc. The campers were taught to spin and weave with alpaca fiber. Come hear what it took to get this type of program off the ground and the benefits their farm has received from offering this type of program.

Richard and Catherine Stickann have been involved with the Alpaca Business since 2003. They have enjoyed all aspects of the business including educating other breeders, interested individuals, University of Missouri veterinarians and veterinarian students. In the summer of 2007 they began educating children about alpacas and the fiber they produce in their Alpaca and Nature Day-Camps.

Richard is a writer who has written magazine articles and a novel. Catherine is a designer that works with alpaca fiber. They reside with their son, Isaac and their Award Winning Alpaca Herd of Sycamore Creek, in Rocheport, Missouri on Sycamore Creek Farm.
